Okay, so, my school day went regularly today. I mean, everything was normal. I've got some homework on the weekends, blah, etc., etc...
After my last period I was helping my teacher out. She's a new teacher and is really a mess, so I usually tidy up the room before going out. My mom expects me late.
Well, a female janitor came in to empty the recycle bin and she remarks, "I wish someone would help me too." And I don't know why, but I said, "I have time" because I did. So I ended up helping her carry some recycle bins, taking the school elevator (first time in my life O.o) and sorting out the stuff that should go into the trash can that were in the recycle bin, etc., etc. And then here's the amazing part.
I speak a tiiinny bit of Mandarin, and some more of Cantonese. The janitor and I went outside at one point, and we saw an old Chinese man in dirty clothes rummaging through a compost bin. The janitor told me she always gave him some food since he was always looking for it, so she and I went out to give it to him. Well, he just waved his hand in a "hi" gesture over and over. Apparently he didn't speak English. I tried Cantonese. "Do you want this?" and pointed to a milk carton in my hand. He just waved, so I tried something else: Mandarin. "Do you want this?" (That's one of the only phrases I know." He immediately started off on a chatter in Mandarin about blah, blah, I can't understand. He pointed to the sky, and I realized he must be taking food for the birds. He also said something about "cows" and I think that was related to milk. So I just nodded politely and smiled, and I said "Good bye" and went back in with the janitor. Shortly after I ran to my locker and all the way back to my mom, who was patiently waiting.
Now here's how I feel. I feel sort of proud about the incident with the man. At the same time, I'm worried. I mean, what if the janitor asks me to do it again? Today was only an exception. I really made my mom wait (30 minutes-wow) and to be honest, I would rather not do it. I don't feel ill of anyone, but I don't want to go through that again, if you get my drift. Good thing it's the weekend.
